Impolite Society:
A Monthly Salon for Romance & Revolutionary Practice
As previously mentioned, I am a Book Person.
Virtually all of my spare hours are spent reading. I read widely, across almost all categories and genres: memoir, fantasy, politics, sci-fi, mystery, science, and history. Above all else, though, I read romance.
Because romance is not fluff.
There is no shame in making the time to read it.
It will not give you "unrealistic expectations” for your relationships.
In fact, romance challenges deeply held norms about joy, desire, and who has the "right" to love, and to be loved.
At its core, romance is power.
By mixing passion with politics, and love with liberation, romance contains the power to completely disrupt the narratives that sustain oppression.
Want to see what I mean?
Take my “Romance & Revolution” Quiz!
This quiz will help you find out what your specific revolutionary archetype is, so that you can (quietly) change the world, your way.
(You'll also get a nifty romance novel recommendation, too!)
Impolite Society is the only learning and development program of its kind.
It is where I help equity advocates build their capacity to create the kinds of justice they want to see in the world: emotional. Social. Political. Cultural.
I do this through a powerful curriculum that includes:
* A curated list of high-quality romance novels that centre the stories of Black and other marginalized people;
* An associated set of revolutionary practice themes to help members meet these increasingly unjust times with grace and confidence;
* A series of on-demand video guides to help deepen their learning; and
* A monthly virtual facilitated discussion, where I use my two decades of equity and social justice experience to help members successfully navigate the complexities and challenges of their work.
FAQ

If you read copious amounts of British historical romance, you’ll find that “polite society” is weaponized in all sorts of ways to keep the main characters from living life on their own terms. This usually means seeking some sort of economic, familial, romantic, and / or bodily independence.
“Impolite Society” is, therefore, a nod to the fact that the romance we read is focused on challenging norms, transgressing taboos, and just generally being unapologetic about any of the things society - historical or contemporary - says you’re “supposed” to be sorry for.
This includes, but is not limited to: being Black; being queer; being poor; being foreign; being female; being “too sensitive”; and, of course, reading romance at all.
“Impolite Society” is about learning, vicariously through the characters’ journeys, how to reject the shame and guilt that dominating, oppressive, imperialist, and unjust society thrives on, so that we can find our way to creating a better, more inclusive, humane, and just world.

For BI & POC people, people who are 2SLGBTQIA+, people who are neurodivergent, and basically anyone who doesn’t belong to one or more privileged identity groups, the vast majority of romance can be challenging to read.
At best, it doesn’t reflect our lived realities and, at worst, it reinscribes white cultural supremacy, especially in its most insidious forms.
In Impolite Society flip that script.
We have a carefully curated list of romances that centre the stories of Black and other marginalized people, thereby mixing passion with politics, and love with liberation.
We combine these stories with a list of revolutionary themes to help enhance our social justice practice, because the personal has always been political.
And the better we understand that, the greater our impact will be.

During the first week of a new book month (e.g. November 2026, January 2027, March 2027, etc.).
That being said, you’re welcome to join at any time, especially if you’re a fast reader, and can finish / nearly finish the book before our monthly call.
Regardless of when you join, though, your first month is free.

Yes. You don’t have to be part of an equity-owed group to join. The vast majority of the novels selected for the Society centre melanated and marginalized characters, but their stories - their journeys of self-discovery, resistance, and transformation - are valuable for everyone.
That being said, all members are expected to have an open mind, an open heart, a strong belief that equity and social justice are good things for everyone, and a willingness to engage with stories that may challenge their own lived experiences, biases, and assumptions about how the world works.

I get it. I really do.
I also want to gently encourage you to reflect on whether it’s actually true that you don’t have time to read… or if it’s that you feel like you shouldn’t make the time to read (especially romance).
If you are a caregiver of any sort, or the person who does the bulk of domestic labour in your home, or someone with a really demanding job, a lot of your time does not belong to you. But some of it still does, and that’s time that you can - and should - set aside for yourself. Not only for your personal well-being but, in the case of Impolite Society, your professional growth and development.

No, you do not!
We strongly recommend getting all books from your local library, or your favourite independent bookstore.
If you do wish to purchase your own copy, however, our fine friends at Queen Books will give all Society members 10% off on select titles (aka, the ones that aren’t subject to tariffs from the U.S. 😒).
ThriftBooks (no affiliation) and Abe Books (no affiliation) are also good options for finding books at affordable prices.

Great question!
Impolite Society is different from other social media groups, in that it is not a social media group.
It is an online learning membership program that asks you to do three things:
Read the book.
Watch the video guides (on your own time, at your own pace).
Join the monthly live facilitated discussions.
That's it!
(Technically, there is a fourth thing: “Watch how your ability to make social justice impact in your work improves by leaps and bounds”, but you know… that’s the happy outcome you’ll get by consistently doing the first three things. 😉 )
