The Fictive Kin Equity Alphabet
“Furthermore, who benefits from this arrangement? Who is harmed? And who gets left off the hook?
By reflecting on these questions, you’re practicing “discernment”: an acute sense of judgement and a keen sense of understanding.
Without these, “diversity” means nothing.”
Lost in translation
“Whew! {fans self}
What a glorious rhetorical manoeuvre that was! I mean, truly... 10 out of 10, no notes.
[U.S] Ambassador Negrea managed to imply false equivalence, nod to moral relativism AND reduce oppression solely to individual suffering, all at the same time. I’m an artsy, not an athlete, but even I can recognize a hat trick when I see one.
(I wonder if he’s been practicing...)”
Talking to your kids about race isn't as difficult as you think
“As we’re putting on hats, scarves, and mitts, I say, ‘But just like some of the other Black kids in your class, you also have a white parent. Which means you’re both!’”
5-year-old: [Silence] Then… ‘Is Daddy the white parent?’
Me, trying very hard not to laugh: ‘Yes.’
5-year-old: [More silence.] Then… ‘How come Daddy’s the white parent?
Me: ‘I don’t know, you’ll have to ask him.’”
Writing Inquiries
I am always seeking opportunities for writing medium- to long form articles merge deep personal reflection with incisive critical analysis, so that readers can easily connect the dots between their life experiences, and the largely invisible systemic forces that shape them.
These articles can take the form of book, television, or film reviews; critical commentary that reveals the hidden machinery behind current events; or analyses of the state of personal relationships, such as friendship or marriage, in these times of economic and political uncertainty.
I am also open to writing guest posts for an institutional website, a newsletter, or a professional publication.
If you'd like to consider me for your publication, please get in touch using the form below. Please note that I am not in a position to accept unpaid assignments at this time.
